According to a source close to the police investigation the money came from CIBC Intria, a subsidiary of the chartered bank that handles currency transactions.
Sources in both banking and the RCMP say the transaction is consistent with how the RCMP funnels money to its confidential informants and agents, and is not an option available to private banking customers.

Families of mass shooting victims file class action against Nova Scotia RCMP
Family members of those killed during the mass
shooting in central Nova Scotia in April are seeking to launch a class
action against the RCMP and the province, arguing police failed to
adequately protect and inform the public during the attacks.
In documents filed in Nova Scotia Supreme Court, the plaintiffs allege the RCMP failed to send timely and appropriate warnings to members of the communities where a gunman killed 22 people in five communities on April 18 and 19.
The allegations in the June 16 document have not been proven in court and neither the RCMP nor the province, which had contracted out policing services to the national force, have filed a statement of defence.
The representative plaintiffs are Andrew O'Brien, the widower of nurse Heather O'Brien, and Tyler Blair, the son of Greg Blair and stepson of Jamie Blair.
Lawyer Sandra McCulloch says the "majority" of family members of the victims are participating in the effort to certify the class action.
The plaintiffs also include people injured by the gunman, who was killed by police on April 19 outside a gas station in Enfield, N.S., and others who suffered property damage when the killer burned houses in several communities.

FDA Revokes Emergency Use of Hydroxychloroquine to Treat Coronavirus

— U.S. regulators on Monday revoked emergency authorization for malaria
drugs promoted by President Donald Trump for treating Covid-19 amid
growing evidence they don’t work and could cause serious side effects.
The Food and Drug Administration said the drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are unlikely to be effective in treating the coronavirus.
Citing reports of heart complications, the FDA said the drugs’ unproven
benefits “do not outweigh the known and potential risks.”

More diabetes drugs recalled over contaminant linked to cancer

Pharmaceutical giant Apotex Inc. is voluntarily recalling a certain
type of diabetes medication after one of the lots was found to have
elevated levels of a contaminant linked to cancer.
On Saturday, Health Canada announced the recall was in effect for
Apotex’s prescription metformin drug APO-METFORMIN ER (extended release)
500-milligram tablets. The public health agency said the drugmaker’s test results showed that one lot (PY7174) contains a nitrosamine impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) that “increased over time to a level above the acceptable limit.” |
Health Canada has shared a list of the affected lots on its website.
Drugs containing metformin are widely used to treat people with Type 2 diabetes because they can reduce excess sugar in the blood.
In recent months, however, there has been growing concern over the safety of patients who ingest NDMA over the course of many years.
The organic compound is safe to consume in small doses over a lifetime, but it can be potentially carcinogenic if it’s taken in higher amounts.
Health Canada states that people are exposed to low levels of nitrosamines through a variety of foods, including smoked and cured meats, dairy products, and vegetables, as well as through drinking water, and air pollution.
“NDMA is not expected to cause harm when ingested at low levels,” the health agency said. “A person taking a drug that contains NDMA at or below the acceptable level every day for 70 years is not expected to have an increased risk of cancer.”
Apotex’s recall is the latest in a string of recent recalls for medications containing metformin.
In March, JAMP Pharma Corporation voluntarily recalled 26 lots of its metformin drug due to the “potential presence of nitrosamine impurities in the finished product.” And Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc. recalled six lots of its prescription RAN-Metformin drug over NDMA levels in February.
Also in February, Health Canada issued a similar recall for eight lots of Apotex’s APO-Metformin ER tablets sold in 500-milligram tablets.
The public health agency advised patients who are taking one of the affected drugs to not stop taking it without first speaking to their health-care provider.

Police seek public assistance after OPP vehicle stolen in Markham

| Investigators are asking for the public’s
help locating an unmarked Ontario Provincial Police vehicle that was
stolen in Markham on Thursday.
Officers with York Regional Police were called to a home in the area of Main Street and Parkway Avenue just after 7 a.m. Police said a Durham Regional Police officer reported that an unmarked vehicle issued to him by the Ontario Provincial Police had been stolen from his driveway. Following an investigation, police determined the theft happened just after 3 a.m. A police-issued rifle, handgun, ammunition, and two conductive energy weapons were inside of a locked compartment in the vehicle, police said. The vehicle is described as a black 2016 Toyota Highlander with an Ontario licence plate BZND 392. Toronto police officer charged in human trafficking involving teen girl
Toronto police say they’ve charged an officer and nine other men in an underage human-trafficking investigation.
Constable Peter Roberts, 49, of Toronto, and the others are facing a charge of obtaining sexual services for consideration from a person under 18.
They say an investigation into the sexual exploitation of a 16-year-old girl started in November.
Investigators say they set out to find people who had paid for sexual services from the girl earlier this year.
The officer involved had 11 years of experience with the police service and worked in 51 Division.
The officer has been suspended with pay and will appear in court this month.

The Race for a Coronavirus Vaccine Runs on Horseshoe Crab Blood
Humans owe a debt to the strange-looking, ancient horseshoe crab. Its blue blood is used in medicine to ensure that anything that gets injected or implanted into the human body is free of potentially life-threatening bacterial contamination. A special compound in the crab’s blood quickly clots in the presence of endotoxins, microbial byproducts that can be harmful, supplying a perfect natural test for purity. In the race to find a COVID-19 vaccine, horseshoe crab blood is very important.
For these reasons, animal rights groups, conservationists and a handful of companies have been pushing for the development and approval of synthetic alternatives to the milky-blue crab blood, reports James Gorman for the New York Times.
Now, an influential United States group has abandoned plans to list a synthetic alternative, called recombinant Factor C (rFC), alongside the tried and true blue fluid, reports John Miller for Reuters. The move by medical standards group U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) would have given rFC equal standing with crab blood, which has long been the industry standard for testing, per Reuters.
The gist of the USP’s rationale is that rFC requires more testing, and that the current crab-derived test has a 30-year track record of safe and effective use, reports the Times. Many expected the alternative test to be approved for widespread use as it was in Europe by the European Pharmacopeia, per the Times.
For drug makers in the U.S., using the synthetic alternative will require a kind of application designed to demonstrate that the non-standard test is up to snuff—a hurdle that makes companies less likely to abandon the animal-based test, reports Caroline Delbert for Popular Mechanics.
In 2018, the blood harvest drained a third of the vital fluids from nearly 500,000 crabs in the U.S., according to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. After scores of steel needles suck their blood, each helmet-shaped crawler gets released back to where it was caught—but thousands of them die in the process. Exactly how many are lost is a matter of debate, but Miller, in another recent story for Reuters, reports that conservation groups estimate switching to rFC could save 100,000 crabs each year.
For their part, the companies that make Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), the component of crab blood isolated for use in drug purity testing, say the supply of horseshoe crabs is up to the task of approving the surge in vaccine testing amid the race for a cure to the novel coronavirus, reports the Times.
One company using rFC, which is created by inserting horseshoe crab genes into lab-grown microorganisms, is Eli Lilly, per the Times. Eli Lilly recently announced it had started testing a COVID-19 antibody in humans with nothing but rFC for purity testing, Jay Bolden, a biologist with the company, tells Reuters. Bolden tells the Times his company made the switch because of the synthetic product’s consistent quality, its reduced costs, lack of reliance on an animal population as well as the company’s desire to avoid harming animals where possible.
More than 40,000 samples tested by Eli Lilly using rFC suggested it was just as good as LAL, Bolden tells Reuters. “And that data is out there, and it’s either not being looked at or it’s being ignored… There’s no reason the USP should be asking for more data.” Source
