Feds award SNC-Lavalin $150 million contract for COVID-19 response
SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. was awarded a $150 million pandemic contract despite former executives being cited for bid-rigging, fraud, bribery and illegal campaign contributions, records show. Opposition MPs have questioned why the Québec engineering firm is not blacklisted as a federal contractor:
According to Blacklock’s Reporter, the public works department admitted it hired SNC-Lavalin weeks after the pandemic outbreak in Canada, as part of the government’s COVID-19 response. The engineering firm received $150 million to design and deliver mobile health units.
NDP MP Charlie Angus called the government’s relationship with
SNC-Lavalin “highly questionable,” asking why the company has not been

Tim Zook’s last post on Facebook brimmed with optimism. “Never been so excited to get a shot before,” he wrote on Jan. 5, above a photo of the Band-Aid on his arm and his COVID-19 vaccination card. “I am now fully vaccinated after receiving my 2nd Pfizer dose.” Zook, 60, was an X-ray technologist at South Coast Global Medical Center in Santa Ana. A couple of hours later, he had an upset stomach and trouble breathing. By 3:30 p.m. it was so bad his colleagues at work walked him to the emergency room. “Should I be worried?” his wife, Rochelle, texted when she got the news. “No, absolutely not,” he texted back. “Do you think this is a direct result of the vaccine?” she typed. “No, no,” he said. “I’m not sure what. But don’t worry.” There were suspicions of COVID and a diagnosis of congestive heart failure. Zook was put on oxygen, then — just four hours later — a BiPAP machine to help push air into the lungs. Multiple tests came back negative for COVID. Shortly after midnight on Jan. 7, the hospital called. Zook was in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator to help him breathe. But his blood pressure soon dropped and he was transferred to UC Irvine Medical Center. “On Friday I get a call, ‘His kidneys are failing. He needs to be on dialysis. If not, he could die — but there’s also a chance he might have a heart attack or stroke on dialysis because his blood pressure is so low,’ ” Rochelle Zook said. By 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, Zook had gone “code blue” twice and was snatched back from the brink of death. There was a third code blue in the afternoon. “They said if he went code blue a fourth time, he’d have brain damage and be a vegetable if he survives,” Rochelle Zook said. 12,400 Israelis Test Positive for Coronavirus After Experimental Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine
Over 12,400 Israeli residents have tested positive for COVID-19 after
being vaccinated, among them 69 people who had already gotten the second
dose, which began to be administered early last week, the Israeli
Health Ministry reported.

Norway Sounds Alarm As 23 Elderly Patients Die After Receiving Pfizer Vaccine
In an alarming development, Norway has cautioned against fatal side-effects of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine as 23 people died in the country after they were administered the first shot. Most of the deceased were reportedly elderly and terminally ill patients. Following the post-mortem of the deceased, as many as 13 reports suggested common side-effects of the vaccine in the sick patients, said the Norwegian government. More than 30,000 people have received the first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccine in the Scandinavian country since the end of December, according to official figures. Reacting to the deaths, the vaccine maker, Pfizer, has said that "the number of incidents so far is not alarming, and in line with expectations."

Chestermere residents angry over canal ice rinks being declared off-limits

Some
Chestermere residents who live along a canal in the south end of the
city are disappointed that they are no longer allowed to skate on the
canal.
On Friday, city staff applied sand to ice on storm ponds and ice surfaces on the canal to discourage skating.

"I
was not happy. It's just cruel. The kids need somewhere to go and do
outdoor things," said Christine Hartos, who lives in the neighbourhood
of Rainbow Falls.
There are several
rinks on the canal that runs through Rainbow Falls that are cleared by
residents. Kevin Deutsch maintains one of them. He said he regularly
tests the thickness of the ice.

gone down approximately 12 inches and I'm not through. I take those
measurements every few days to ensure safety. That's of utmost
