Mom wakes from c-section to discover both legs amputated

In December 2015, Ella Clarke was excited to meet her eighth child — a baby girl.
Clarke, 31, of Torquay, Devon, happened to have a condition called placenta previa, also known as a low-lying placenta. She was told midway through her pregnancy that she would have to deliver via c-section. This was no big deal, as the mama of seven had delivered six of her babies the same way.
Clarke was put to sleep for her scheduled c-section. But when she woke up six days later, she discovered both of her legs had been amputated below the knee.
It all started about 30 minutes into the c-section. Clarke’s placenta had embedded itself too deeply into her uterine wall — a complication known as placenta accreta — which caused massive hemorrhaging. As a result, she had an emergency hysterectomy, had five blood transfusions and was placed in an induced coma. Her baby girl, Winter Rose, was delivered safely.
While still in a coma, Clarke was supposed to be monitored every hour for blood clotting. Six hours allegedly passed without her being checked. Blood in her legs clotted, stopping circulation and depriving her lower limbs of blood supply. The deadly mistake was caught too late.
Although surgeons desperately tried to restore circulation, they were ultimately forced to amputate both legs in order to save her life. “I remember the moment I woke up. I thought I was waking up from my c-section,” Clarke told Daily Mail. “I expected my beautiful little baby girl to be passed to me. I had no idea I’d been in a coma.”
The hospital has since apologized for its mistake and a thorough investigation is ongoing. Still, this once-active mom of eight now has a wheel chair and prosthetic legs — all because of a medical oversight. One that should have easily been prevented.
“I knew the risks of blood loss, but I never expected to wake up three days later without my legs,” Clarke said. “Going into hospital to have a baby should have been the best moment of my life. Instead my world has been shattered.”
