UPDATE: Four Montreal police officers arrested
UPDATED Montreal police have arrested four of their own,
including two experienced investigators who face charges of perjury and
trying to obstruct justice in connection with their work with
informants.
David Chartrand and Fayçal Djelidi are both investigators with the squad dealing with morality and street gangs in the southern sector of the city. Djelidi also faces charges of breach of trust, solicitation and obtaining sexual services for payment. Djelidi faces nine charges while Chartrand faces four. The two other officers could also face charges. The investigation by internal affairs is ongoing.
Montreal police chief Philippe Pichet told a last minute news conference at police headquarters that he had cut short his vacation to be there. He said the news about his officers was a disappointment but he also firmly denounced it.
"That officers commit criminal offences is totally unacceptable. Today, unfortunately, officers have committed reprehensible acts and as a police force, we have to intervene and do our work right to the end," said Pichet.
He said to prevent jeopardizing the investigation, he couldn't say much about what the officers are alleged to have done. The investigation began in December of last year after they noticed irregularities during the usual administrative checks and the red flags went up.
"You have to understand that they're controlling sources, they have to follow some administrative process. There were some mistakes done at that time, we tried to correct them, that didn't work so we started the criminal part (of the investigation)," said Pichet.
Djelidi and Chartrand are suspended without pay. Djelidi is a 16-year veteran of the force and Chartrand has been there for 11 years.
