A National Post article entitled Inside Canada’s Secret World of Medical Error: ‘There is a lot of lying, there’s a lot of cover-up’ highlights the issue of medical error and the dangerous trend of non-reporting in the Canadian healthcare system.
The article estimates that approximately 70,000 Canadian patients a
year experience serious but preventable injury as a result of medical
treatment. It points out research from a decade ago which found that as
many as 23,000 Canadian adults die annually as a result of prevent
adverse events in acute-care hospitals alone. It also suggests that the
rate of error may be higher today despite millions of dollars spent on
patient safety efforts.
