Moose Jaw pharmacist fined for accepting $700,000 in gift cards from drug company

A Saskatchewan pharmacist must pay $19,000 after pleading guilty to professional misconduct for accepting more than $700,000 in kickbacks from a pharmaceutical company.
Niklas Voelk, who managed the Co-op pharmacy in Moose Jaw, received prepaid Visa cards, gift cards and American Express certificates from the company Pharmascience between 2005 until 2013.
His guilty plea and the statement of facts of his case are contained in a disciplinary report filed by the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacy Professionals.
The penalty imposed includes a $5,000 fine and $14,000 to reimburse the college for its investigation.
He has until Dec. 1 to pay the full amount and if he doesn't his licence will be suspended until he does.
The complaint against Voelk was filed by Moose Jaw Co-op in November 2015 a month after he was fired.
College registrar Jeana Wendel says lawyers working on the case couldn’t find any comparable ones in Saskatchewan and had to look out of province to find others to reference.
Wendel also says the $5,000 fine was the maximum the college could levy against a member at the time of Voelk’s actions.
She says the $5,000 amount likely wasn't a good deterrent.
The current maximum allowable fine is now $100,000 after Saskatchewan's Pharmacy Amendment Act was passed in 2015.
