John of God is a so-called "medium" or "spiritual healer" who was repeatedly promoted by the mainstream media and especially Oprah Winfrey and others connected to her and her publications. The Brazilian religious landscape is one hardly recognizable to most Americans. In Brazil, it is common to see Catholicism mixed together in a syncretic blend with other pagan belief systems. John of God has sat at the center of such a system for many decades: blending the views of Loyola, spiritism, animism, the use of idols, gems, crystals, "blessed" water, and entering trance-like states opening himself up to various "entities" that grant him powers. If those aspects are not shocking enough, things only get much, much worse from there if the accusations from over 600 women are to be believed.
