| Pfizer has reportedly agreed to settle more than 10,000 lawsuits that were filed over alleged cancer risks related to the discontinued heartburn drug Zantac. The company has been accused of failing to warn people about a cancer-causing substance called NDMA that was found in the drug. Zantaz was a popular over-the-counter medication used to combat heart.The Food and Drug Administration removed Zantac and all of the generic versions of it, called ranitidine, from the market in 2020 after discovering the contaminant. NDMA is a probable human carcinogen that is safe to ingest in small doses. The FDA first found low levels of NDMA in ranitidine during testing but later found that the levels increased over time in some products. Lawsuits were filed all over the US following the news. On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that Pfizer had agreed to settle over 10,000 of them outside of court. |
