An example of the scam post: According to a post that has been hurtling around Facebook at speed
in recent days, you can get a free Tim Hortons hamper just by sharing
and commenting. Supposedly, the hamper contains a $60 Tim Hortons gift voucher along with “surprises that will make your heart flutter”. The post claims that you must share and comment by a specified date and time and then click a link to validate your entry. However, the post has no connection to Tim Hortons, and no amount of sharing and commenting will get you the promised hamper or any other prize. The post is a Facebook giveaway scam designed to promote a fraudulent Facebook Page and trick you into submitting your personal and financial information on suspect websites. Like similar scams, the post falsely claims that the giveaway is to customers as the company celebrates an anniversary. Clicking the link takes you to a scam website that pretends to validate your entry before claiming that you have won the Tim Hortons hamper. Next, the site claims that you can win further prizes by clicking a button and completing a brief survey. After completing the survey and participating in a phoney prize draw, you are told that you have won a new Samsung phone. But, to get your new phone, you are told that you must enter your credit card details to pay a small shipping fee. The site also asks for other personal information such as your name, address, and contact details. Any site that uses deceptive tactics such as fake giveaways should
never be trusted with your credit card details are any other personal
information. Please don’t be tempted to participate. You have zero chance of winning anything, and you may end up becoming a victim of credit card fraud and identity theft. Furthermore, by sharing and commenting, you also expose your Facebook friends and family to the scam. Note that the cut off date and time for entering varies in different versions of the scam. At the time of writing, the scam Facebook Page promoting the fake giveaway had already been taken down. However, new versions may appear in the coming days. Source |
