Coronavirus outbreak: President Donald Trump to speak on U.S. response to COVID-19 | LIVE
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to hold a press conference on Saturday about recent developments involving the COVID-19 virus. On Friday, Washington state and Oregon each announced new cases of the virus that were not linked to international travel or contact with other people infected with the disease. Earlier this week, California also reported one such case.
Pompeo Won't Say Whether Coronavirus Is a Hoax
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo defended the Trump administration's response to the spreading coronavirus amid contentious questions from Democrats at a House hearing Friday morning. The House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing was meant to focus on the Trump administration's dealings with Iran and Iraq, but many of the questions centered on the coronavirus. Pompeo said repeatedly he was confident that the administration had taken action to reduce the threat. When asked if he believes the coronavirus is "a hoax," as some have suggested, Pompeo declined to answer, saying only that the administration is "working to keep people safe." Other lawmakers said they had little faith in the administration's response to the growing global outbreak. "I'm worried that because of this administration's three-year history of blatant disregard for facts, that the American people don't know who to trust," said Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline. "Because of the policies you've championed, we have isolated ourselves within the global community. We've ignored or defunded key government offices or international entities that deal with global health and pandemics," he said. Other Democrats on the committee also expressed frustration that the panel was afforded only two hours to question Pompeo, who until Friday had gone months without a public appearance on Capitol Hill. "You can only give two hours to this bipartisan group of members of Congress and instead of answering questions on life and death issues from a bipartisan group of America's representatives, you're going to go talk to a special interest group," said California Rep. Ted Lieu. "You, sir, represent all Americans, not a special interest group. It is shameful you can't even answer basic questions."

What’s in Children’s Drinking Water? Far Too Often, Something Neurotoxic
Hollywood seems to love a good David versus corporate Goliath tale,
and the stories it brings to the silver screen not infrequently revolve
around real-life contamination of community water. Twenty years ago, the
film Erin Brockovich called attention to a cancer-causing
chemical dumped in a California community by Pacific Gas & Electric,
while the recent film Dark Waters focuses on DuPont’s
contamination of a West Virginia town’s water with the chemical PFOA
(perfluorooctanoic acid). Outside of Tinseltown, occurrences such as the
2014 lead debacle in Flint, Michigan—and especially its dramatic impact on children’s cognition and behavior—have helped ensure that water-quality-related incidents continue to get occasional media attention. PFOA belongs to a wider family of chemicals called PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The scientific evidence clearly indicates that drinking water contaminants such as PFAS, lead and many others—as well as the fluoride that, incredibly, is intentionally added to drinking water—are not doing anyone any good. However, these exposures are of particular concern for children. This is because growing children drink more water than adults (per pound of body weight) and are exquisitely vulnerable to adverse developmental effects. As the Environmental Working Group (EWG) points out, “A baby fed exclusively powdered formula mixed with tap water drinks the most water for its small size of any age group”; in this scenario, tap water may represent up to 85% of a formula-fed baby’s diet. Assange extradition hearing starts at Woolwich court in London:
Ruptly is live outside Woolwich Crown Court in London on Monday, February 24, as WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange is expected to attend his first extradition hearing. The hearing is expected to last for a week but will be split into two parts, the second one resuming on May 18 for another three weeks. The WikiLeaks founder has been behind bars in Belmarsh Prison since May 2019, after he was sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching his bail conditions to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations. Despite the sentence coming to an end on September 22, a British judge ordered Assange to remain in prison while facing proceedings concerning possible extradition to the US, due to his previous history of absconding.

Children And Youth Services Caseworker Charged With Forcing Mother Into Prostitution
A former child services caseworker has been charged with human trafficking, accused of recruiting a mother who was her client into prostitution in exchange for a favorable custody recommendation, authorities said.
Candace Talley, 27, of Winslow, New Jersey, was working for the Division of Children and Youth Services in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, when she coerced the mother, whose children were in foster care and whose case Talley was managing, into working as a prostitute, the Delaware County District Attorney's office announced Thursday.
Talley drove the woman to and from jobs and took more than 25% of the money that was made, authorities said. Talley also promised the woman she would help falsify her drug test results to help her case. Talley was part of an “extensive prostitution ring,” the district attorney's office said in a press release.
Talley was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of human trafficking for financial gain, promoting prostitution, making threats and other related charges.

Household cleaner use linked to asthma risk in children: study
Frequent exposure to common household cleaners and air fresheners in
the first three months of life can lead to an increased risk for
childhood asthma, say SFU researchers. The study, published Tuesday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, found that infants who spent 80 to 90 per cent of their time indoors in homes where multiple household cleaning products were often used were more likely to develop childhood wheeze and asthma by three years of age than the infants whose caregivers did not frequently use cleaning products. The study’s lead researcher, Dr. Tim Takaro, a professor and clinician-scientist at SFU’s faculty of health sciences, said “high use” can mean using a few products frequently or using many products less frequently. He said spray products, oven cleaners, deodorizers and other things that have fragrance are the worst offenders, including many products that claim to be “natural” or “eco-friendly.” “So if you use those on a weekly basis, you are probably getting into the high category,” he said. Researchers looked at data from 2,022 children, who participated in the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Cohort Study between 2008 and 2015. They examined their daily, weekly and monthly exposure to 26 types of household cleaners, including dishwashing and laundry detergents, cleaners, disinfectants, polishes, and air fresheners. For example, they found infants with high exposure to common cleaning products were 10.8 per cent more likely to develop a recurrent wheeze, compared with 7.7 per cent of infants whose caregivers did not use cleaners frequently. They were also 7.9 per cent more likely to develop asthma, compared with 4.8 per cent of infants living in homes with low use of cleaners. Takaro said new parents who are concerned about what products they are using around their babies should not use products with fragrance. “The smell of a clean home should be no smell. It shouldn’t be lilacs or some artificial lemon smell.” He also advised using products that don’t spray, use water to rinse off any areas that have been cleaned, and don’t clean near a baby or child. “Or just use soap and water. It works, and so do natural products like vinegar and baking soda, which are much safer. We are asking parents to think about their cleaning and use less chemicals.” They said factors known to affect the onset of asthma, such as family history and early exposure to tobacco smoke, pets, and mould, were accounted for in the analysis. Researchers believe frequent use of cleaning products may lead to inflammation of the lining of the lungs. “These are very delicate membranes that line our respiratory track and these chemicals inflame that lining. When they are inflamed, we are more susceptible to respiratory infections, to other chemicals, and also to allergens,” said Takaro. Recurrent wheeze and asthma were notably higher in homes with frequent use of certain products, such as liquid or solid air fresheners, plug-in deodorizers, dusting sprays, antimicrobial hand sanitizers and oven cleaners. “The automatic plug-in deodorizers are terrible. They contain chemicals that irritate the lungs,” said Takaro, adding that Canada doesn’t have strict laws about cleaning products, and often harmful chemicals are listed simply as “fragrance” or “stabilizer.” He said they know many cleaning products contain “fragrances” that contain phthalates, which are known to make asthma worse. The paper’s lead author, Jaclyn Parks, a graduate student in SFU’s faculty of health sciences, says it may be important for people to consider removing scented spray cleaning products from their cleaning routine.“The big takeaway from this study is that the first few months of life are critical for the development of a baby’s immune and respiratory systems,” said Parks, adding that by identifying hazardous exposure, parents can take preventative measures to reduce asthma risk.Launched in 2008 by the Canadian Institute for Health Research and AllerGen NCE, the CHILD Study is tracking nearly 3,500 Canadian infants and their families to help determine the root causes of chronic diseases such as asthma, allergies and obesity.
